“For this review, I did a split-head test between the Airstrait and my Revair, both are wet-to-dry tools and both straighten. The Revair is like a vacuum for your hair — it pulls it into a tube to straighten it and get the water out. It’s very bulky, though, and has to sit on the bathroom floor or counter — you could never travel with it. With my Airwrap or flatiron, I get a glass-like finish — I didn’t get that with the Airstrait. For a high gloss, I had to go back over my hair with a traditional flatiron, bringing my total styling time to about 45 minutes. With the right sectioning technique, styling products, and attachments, I was able to eventually figure it out. Although we’ve also gotten our hands on the Dyson Airwrap—the company’s viral, high-end hair-styling device that comes with multiple styling attachments—we haven’t put it through the same rigorous testing as our hair dryer picks. We did find that the Airwrap was good at styling damp or dry hair, but Dyson says the Airwrap is not as powerful as the Supersonic Hair Dryer, and it isn’t compatible with diffusers or concentrators, a requirement that we set when picking hair dryers to test. Meanwhile, the Airwrap for long hair has three longer curling barrel sizes to also create tight and loose curls. The brush attachments can also shape and smooth for straighter styles.

It’s the hardest to keep color-treated hair healthy and strong, but @cecred is here. Congratulations to the entire CÉCRED team for contributing to developing award-winning products,” she captioned the video. The Dyson Airstrait draws on the same basic principles of heat and tension but takes a different approach, using only controlled hot (but not too hot) air to change the shape of the hair.
Can I use the new attachments on the old Airwrap?
If, for any reason, you need to use a new attachment with an older Airwrap base model—or an older attachment with the newer Airwrap Complete—you’ll be able to mix and match without a problem. You can easily replace attachments by buying them individually online, or test the upgraded attachments with your older device if you already have one at home. The wide tooth comb attachment ($40) is also available for separate purchase if you didn’t buy the curly/coily set, which includes it in place of the soft smoothing brush.

What once cost me a salon visit I can now do on my own whenever I choose. I also love that the heat is so much gentler which means less damage to my hair over time. Before a flatiron lays its hot plates on a single strand, I've already endured close to 24 hours of air-drying time. If I don’t have a full day to wait and I use a blow-dryer, my hair turns into a gigantic puffball, requiring many passes to iron it out. The idea of cutting down drying and styling time with the Dyson Airstrait almost sounded too good to be true. On the tool’s color-LCD screen, you can choose whether to straighten wet or dry hair and your preferred heat setting.
What Is the Dyson Airwrap?
As a beauty editor, I’ve been happily using the same one ever since — and it’s still performing just as well, even after much use (and being dropped many, many times). “I did, however, have flyaways, and my hair wasn’t as shiny as it would be if I hit it with a traditional flatiron — though it was a bit shinier than after an at-home round-brush blowout. For a more finished look, I smoothed those flyaways with a few sweeps of the R+Co Dart Pomade Stick and massaged a few drops of Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil along the lengths of my hair for more shine. For maximum smoothness and minimal flyways, I found the trick is to move slowly. According to my stopwatch, it took 11 seconds to move the tool down my longest layer, which is about 17 inches. “After I finished styling my entire head — which took about 20 minutes — my hair was straight and extra-soft.

The other attachments have been updated as well, though the updates are not as noticeable, in my opinion. The only other big change is the rough dry attachment, which now also has a flyaway smoother setting. Dyson is well known for its innovations in the vacuum category—so it makes sense that the brand decided to utilize a similar air pressure technology to release its line of blow-dryers and, later, versatile hair stylers.

“When you switch from wet to dry, the unit allows for the selection of different temperatures and different flow settings,” says Craft. Depending on the combination of attachments you utilize on any given day, you can use the Airwrap to rough dry hair, create curls or waves, style bangs, smooth flyaways, blow hair straight, style a bouncy blowout, and more. The Airwrap for short hair is made with shorter barrels for styling short hair with three different sizes for both tight and loose curls.

Because driving all the water out of the hair structure creates new temporary bonds in the hair that allow it to be (temporarily) anchored into a straight position when pressed and pulled between two plates. When the Dyson Airwrap blew up on TikTok in 2021, I was curious whether it was as life-changing as it looked. And I’m not speaking in hyperbole—as someone who gets blowouts every couple of months, occasionally styles my hair for work, and is attending a large number of weddings over the next year, I could theoretically save hundreds if I was able to style my own hair. Luckily, I was able to test the Airwrap for our 2022 Healthy Beauty Awards, where the product won best at-home hair tool.
We also like that it was one of the quietest vacuums (73 decibels) we tested and has some fun, high-tech features, including a sensor that automatically adjusts suction and a laser headlight that illuminates dust in dim corners. Dyson products don’t come cheap, but our testing has shown that some of them are worth the splurge. “Straight out of the shower, after a rough towel dry, I turned the Airstrait to wet mode and put it on the highest heat setting (275°F) and airflow. With the same amount of hair as I would blow-dry with a round brush, I saw my hair dry within seconds of passing my strands through the clamps (with little to no visible steam). Like my fellow testers, I soon realized that the slower I went, the straighter, glossier results I got. Though the Airwrap Complete comes with attachments, Dyson sells attachments separately too.
